Love, Pomegranate House

Prettifying Plain Cupcakes

Prettyifying is a word, right? Well… it is now! Birthdays are a big deal around our house. The include a special dessert, special homemade dinner, and a separate day of a big fancy meal at a restaurant of the birthday-er’s choice. Okay, maybe that isn’t a “huge” deal. But we like to make it as special as possible.

Prettifying Plain Cupcakes

It was the hubby’s birthday last week and I wanted to make it a big deal! I wanted it to feel special despite being away from our families. When it came to making his birthday dessert, he had one request: Funfetti. It’s his all time favorite. I promise he isn’t 12. How was I going to make plain ol’ box mix fancy?

I wanted to figure out a way to make it homemade, but seeing as how we were both sick last week {the hubby says it’s been so quiet since I’ve lost my voice}, I decided to stick with the box mix.

But, being the blogger and crafter that I am, I wanted to make him a pretty dessert. Like any good manly man, my man loves pirates. Maybe it is the call of the open sea, maybe it is the plundering, or maybe it’s just because they say silly things like “Argh, matey!” So, my mother and mother-in-law had found these adorable cupcake liners and pirate flags for me to use.

Along with my box mix and store-bought frosting I pulled out my piping bag and some blue food coloring.

First, I whipped up the cake mix following the box instructions and baked my cupcakes in my liners. I would have ventured to spruce up the mix a bit but I was lazy sick.

While my cupcakes were cooling I threw my frosting into the mixer and added several drops of blue food coloring to make my “Caribbean Blue” frosting. Then I scooped it into my piping bag and played around with making some frosting “waves”. {Disclaimer: I’m incredibly new to playing with my piping bag and tips. I have no clue what I’m doing really. I just play around until I get what I like. Afterall, an ugly cupcake is still a cupcake.}

If you don’t have a piping bag, you can also use a ziploc baggie and cut off the corner of the bag and pipe frosting that way.

I frosted all my cupcakes with different tips to make them look like waves and stuck that pirate flag in them.

The cupcake liners are adorable and worked out great! They really gave that extra touch.

The hubby loved them and was surprised by my take on his plain cupcake choice.

So simple but such an effective way to pretend you did some work. You may even fool someone that you bought them!
