Do you guys realize how quickly the holidays are coming up!? Wasn’t it just October yesterday?? Where is the time going? SLOW DOWN! I don’t know about you, but I do a lot of cooking/baking around the holidays. Not just for the holidays themselves, but also for all the friend/family get-togethers and parties. ‘Tis the season, I guess. And with all of the time I spend in the kitchen this time of year, I always begin to notice some of my kitchen’s shortcomings. One of the biggest areas I’m noticing right now? My pantry. It isn’t nearly as organized as I would like and it makes finding things a little difficult. So when Avery contacted me asking me to use their labels, I instantly knew I was going to do a pantry mini-makeover.
My pantry started out like this. Not terrible, but not great. The cans are stacked high and often topple over when I go to remove one. Can we say annoying?? It definitely isn’t conducive to retrieving items quickly while in the midst of baking (p.s. It makes me feel all smart and schmancy when I use the phrase “in the midst…”… until I realize that I just used the word “schmancy”). When we moved in, the pantry had 5 shelves, but the bottom shelf had to be removed in order to fit some of my taller kitchen gadgets.
First, I removed all of the contents of my pantry and transferred them to the dining table. I started looking at expiration dates and throwing out food that had gone bad. Yikes. Call me a waster. Canisters were refilled and nearly empty boxes got tossed. I also made a pile of food that we would never use but still was good to donate to our church’s food pantry.
Then began the best part… organizing!! Woohoo! Am I the only crazy person who thinks organizing is fun? I started by separating the remaining food into groupings based on how they are used/what they are. Then I gathered up some baskets and crates that I had lying around the house to help hide the less pretty items.
I went on to the Avery site and downloaded the template for the 2×3.5-inch tags they sent me. They have an awesome selection of designs on their site for every type of label they sell but I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, so I whipped up a design of my own. It was crazy easy to use and print. I also really loved that the tags came with little strings to hang the tags from.
I slid the little strings that came with the tags through my baskets and attached the tags. “Roots” for my potatoes and the “baking goods” basket to corral all the miscellaneous cans and containers.
I like to stock up on rice and pasta when it goes on sale so all those big boxes were hidden in a pretty crate.
And finally, all the soups and lunch items for my hubby were put in another crate so he could easily find the things he could bring to work for lunch.
My baking canisters were split into ‘most used’ lower down and ‘less often used’ higher up. Condiments and beverages (coffee filters, tea, hot cocoa…) were also organized together. I seriously love how professionally made my Avery tags look! Plus, I figured that the hubby would be quite appreciative of labels so he could find things in the pantry.
And since we all love a little before and after…
Sometime down the line, I would love to remove all the wire shelves and replace them with good quality shelves as well as paint the walls of the pantry. But in the meantime, my mini-makeover definitely will do the trick!
I love my tags so much! I mean, think of all the possibilities! Not just for organizing, but for Christmas gifts, table settings, and greeting card labels. Be sure to check out Avery on Pinterest to see some of the other amazing ideas they have.
