How-to Paint Laminate Furniture

I have always been afraid of painting laminate furniture. I tried it before and ended up with scratches and nicks in my paint. Boo.

How-to Paint Laminate Furniture

I have been wanting an entryway bench for quite a while now. A place right near my shoes to slip them on? Yes, please!

{Eeek! Ignore all that nasty dust! Gross.}Β I found this old TV stand at my local thrift store for only $10 and it was the perfect size to make into my much desired bench! Β But it was laminate. It was time to try a new painting technique!

Begin by doing a light sanding on your entire piece. Wipe off the dust with a wet cloth.Β Prime your piece of furniture.

I used Kilz Latex Primer. It had great coverage and made the paint coats go on easily.

Then paint your piece of furniture whatever color your little heart desires. For my bench, I used Behr’s Russian Blue. I only needed 2 coats of paint.

Apply 3 coats of Polycrylic Protective Finish with a paint brush, not a roller. Between each layer, lightly sand the surface to make future layers adhere better. Wipe off the dust from sanding with a wet cloth. Let each coat dry for at least 1 hour.

Now you’re done! So simple! My bench hasn’t scratched once using this technique! And now a whole new realm of thrift store furniture is open for revamp!

Have you guys ever painted your laminate furniture? What were the outcomes?
