Blah. That’s what I think when I see my dining room in its current state. It hasn’t undergone any real transformations except that I painted it the first week we moved in. I basically threw my grandmother’s hutch and my 120+ year old mahogany table in there and called it a day. I haven’t even put up blinds or curtains or anything…. “Hello neighbors! Don’t pay any attention to the lady who wears yoga pants all day everyday!” And I guess it isn’t necessarily even a dining “room” as much as a large eat-in kitchen area.
It’s time for a change. My dining room is begging to be shown a little love. Plus, my original plan for decorating our home was to begin with the rooms we spend the most time in and guests see the most. Hence, beginning with the living room, kitchen, and main bath. I’ve just been ignoring the dining room because I didn’t know what to do with it.
It is a big blue blank slate. But it needs to blend well with the living room and kitchen since those three rooms make up the great room. Since I’m obviously horrible at picking paint colors (as evidenced by the fact that 3 of the 6 rooms I’ve painted have already been or are in the process of being repainted), I wanted to go with a foolproof way of choosing the perfect paint colors. Enter Sherwin-Williams. I don’t know if you have caught on, but I love Sherwin-Williams. SW is my jam! For serious, it is always one of my first stops when it comes to choosing paint colors. They have the BEST selection and their paint is awesomesauce.
Sherwin-Williams has some great color selection tools on their site. My favorite is their Color Visualizer. It allows you to picture it before you paint it. The powerful Color Visualizer will turn your computer into a virtual design studio. You can either upload a picture of your room or use one of their scenes to play with color options for your room. Lucky for me, one of their scenes looks very similar to my dining room!
As I’ve been brainstorming this room, I’ve been thinking it needs some interest. I’m thinking of using a stencil to add a little bit of pattern to the room. In order to make the statement I’m going for, I need 2 colors. I’m thinking a goldish color could be fun! But we have already established that I am not good at picking paint colors, so I decided to use the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams color collections. They have 8 designer-inspired coordinated color collections that highlight 20 colors that are designed to work beautifully together in any combination. Hello foolproof! While in the Color Visualizer, I opened up the color collections and started playing with them in the dining room scene. I was even able to change the color of the living room and couches to be closer to the colors in my home! The color collection I chose here is called the Liveable Luxe.
All you have to do is grab the color you want on the left side and drag it into the scene and drop it in the area you want to be that color.
Voila! I am so happy that I figured out what colors I want to use! I plan to use SW 7004 Snowbound and SW 6148 Wool Skein from the Liveable Luxe color collection. We already use SW 7006 Extra White for all the trim in our home so we will use it there as well. And now that I have found the perfect palette, I can print out the color information (and a coupon!!) and bring it to Sherwin-Williams to get my colors. Love! For more information about all the great color selection tools and paint options at Sherwin-Williams, be sure to visit and (friendly) stalk them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram. - Paint hutch
- Add blinds & curtains
