Ampersand Throw Pillow

Ampersand Throw Pillow

You know when you are working on a project and you have a vision of what you want? But then you just can’t find it anywhere?? That is the story of me and my newest throw pillow. I have wanted a cute little gray and yellow pillow to go with our new bedding and master bedroom revamp that either had an ampersand or a silhouette of a cute little animal. But, I couldn’t find one anywhere for a reasonable price. What’s a crafty girl to do!? DIY it, of course! So, I pulled out my crafting supplies and I made my very own DIY Ampersand Throw Pillow!

I’ve been planning on making this for several weeks now. But time just slipped away from me! In fact, I’m pretty much ready to make the switch to our new bedding but I’m being slow on making our throw pillows. This glorious weather is making me a slacker. Does anyone else get that way when the weather is gorgeous??

FYI, I sewed a simple and basic envelope closure pillow cover for my pillow. But you could also embellish an already made pillow cover. You’ll use the same principles. This isn’t so much a “how-to sew a pillow” tutorial {I’ve got one of those here}. This is more of a “how-to embellish a pillow with an ampersand {or any shape} sans Silhouette” kind of tutorial.

Supplies:

  • Fabric/thread/sewing machine {if making your own pillow} or pillow cover
  • Pillow insert
  • Scissors
  • Fabric paint
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Chalk fabric pencil
  • Wax Paper/Cardboard

Print out an ampersand in the font of your choice, sizing it correctly for your pillow. My pillow is 13×13-inches and I wanted my ampersand to be 9×9-inch. So, of course, it got cut off a little bit. But I was able to freehand that tiny bit. If you want yours bigger than a standard size piece of paper, you can always just print it on 2 pages.

Cut out your ampersand and place it on the front of your pillow. Trace the ampersand with your fabric chalk pencil, transferring the symbol onto your pillow.

Mix together 2 parts acrylic paint with 1 part fabric paint. Place a piece of cardboard or wax paper {or back of a cookie sheet, like me} under the area to be painted. Paint within the chalk lines. Apply 2-3 coats until you reach the desired coverage.

Sew your pillow together and/or slip on pillow cover. Now stand back and admire your handiwork!! Isn’t it so cute!? It gives just the pop of color I was looking for! Plus, who doesn’t love a curvy ampersand?? I know I do. I also love the versatility of this project! Want a different shape? Same principles!
